Can you believe it’s already 2019!! It’s never too early to start thinking about your garden. In fact, if you plan on starting your own seeds, some of them need to be started this month!!
Over the past couple of weeks, our mailbox has been filling up with various seed catalogs. The Baker Creek catalog is always our favorite. It’s one of the most well throughout, informative and beautiful catalogs available – definitely coffee table worthy if you can manage to wipe the drool off the pages!!
If you haven’t already ordered catalogs from your favorite seed companies, now is the time to do it.
Here is a list of our favorites. They have all signed the Safe Seed Pledge, meaning they pledge to not knowingly buy, sell or trade genetically engineered seeds or plants (GMO’s are BAD)… and they will send you a FREE catalog!
- Annies Heirloom Seeds
- Botanical Interest
- Baker Creek
- Seed Savers Exchange
- Seed Trust (DOWNLOAD ONLY)
- Strictly Medicinal (they are offering FREE SHIPPING on seeds until the end of January!!)
- Territorial Seeds
Here are few more things you can do in JANUARY to make your gardening season smoother:
- Find your USDA Plant Hardiness Zone and start thinking about what you would like to plant in your garden and when the seeds need to be started.
- Go through your leftover seeds, discarding those that are too old or damaged.
- Make a list of seeds you need (or want) to order.
- Order your seeds!!
It’s so exciting getting packages of new seeds in the mail! If you know you’re not going to want or need all the seeds in the packet, consider purchasing them with a friend and splitting the package OR consider holding a seed trading event in your community!!
For more tips and helpful garden ideas, see our Garden Journal available in our Etsy Store as a download!! It has over 30 pages of helpful logs, planners, charts and tips which will not only help you stay organized but as a result of being organized, you’ll have a much better gardening experience!!
Are there seed companies you use that we missed? Leave the information in the comments below.

You’re welcome! You. Can purchase their rare seeds catalog for $10… and it’s even more amazing (if possible) than the free one!!

I agree with you on the Baker Creek Heirloom catalog. I love their tomatoes selection and purchase one new type of tomato seeds from them to try every year. I would also like to suggest Johnny’s Selected seeds. This company also signed the Safe Seed Pledge and offers many organic seed varieties. Since I strictly grow organic, both vegetables and flowers, I alternately get my leafy vegetable seeds from either Jonnny’s selected seeds or Territorial Seed. Also, Select Seeds is a good one if you’re interested in flower seeds.

Thank you for the feedback. I will check out Johnny’s and see if I can add them to the list. Do you save your own seeds?

Yes, I do. I grow varieties of beans, tomatoes, peppers and basil and have been saving their seeds.
